Herb Hartsook of South Carolina Political Collections (SCPC) suggested the creation of this digital collection to be selected from the Papers of Robert McNair. Mark Firmin, an SCPC summer intern, chose the documents and created the metadata for each in an Excel spread sheet. Through the pragmatic and strong leadership of Governor McNair, South Carolina prospered and progressed during a profound era of social change. Mark took great pleasure in selecting documents from Governor McNair’s collection to make up "In His Own Words." He sought documents that reflected the successes, failures, trials, and tribulations that Governor McNair and South Carolina endured through twenty years as a public servant.

The metadata records follow the Western States Best Practices Dublin Core format. Mark scanned the documents on a flatbed Epson Expression 1000XL Photo scanner, using Silverfast scanning software, as color TIFFs at 24-bit and 300 dpi. From the TIFFs he created high quality JPEGs and added preservation metadata to the TIFF and JPEG images. He uploaded the JPEGs to the CONTENTdm server. The TIFFs will be maintained as the archival masters on DVD. Mark also created a home page for the collection with technical assistance from Digital Collections. The work could also not have been done without the help of Lori Schwartz, Randy Heard, and Tony Branch of the Systems Department, who is the systems administrator for the CONTENTdm database and helps to manage the computers and scanners in the Digital Collections Department. Patricia Sasser and Kate Boyd of Digital Collections provided training and assistance throughout the project.
